What I Signed Without Understanding

-

I remember the paper. It was just set in front of me. No big explanation. Just a quick, “this is part of the process.”

I glanced at it. I didn’t sit with it. I didn’t go line by line. I thought I understood enough. I thought it was temporary.

That’s what stuck in my head. That this was just something to get through. Something that would help move things along. I wasn’t trying to make a mistake. I was trying to do what I thought was right in the moment.

So I signed it.

There wasn’t a pause after. Nobody stopped me. Nobody said, “take this home and read it.” It was just the next step, and I took it.

It didn’t feel like a big decision. It didn’t feel like something that would follow me. That part came later.

Later, when things didn’t go back to normal.
Later, when I started hearing pieces of that document come up again.
Later, when I realized that what I signed wasn’t just sitting in a file somewhere. It was being used.

That’s when it hit me.

I didn’t actually understand what I agreed to.

Not fully. Not in the way that mattered.

I went back in my mind so many times, trying to remember exactly what it said. Trying to figure out where I missed it. But the truth is, I didn’t slow down enough to even see what I was signing.

And by the time I understood it, it was already done.

You don’t always realize the weight of something when it’s happening. Sometimes it feels small. Routine. Like something people sign every day.

Until it isn’t.

If I could go back, I wouldn’t rush it. I wouldn’t assume. I wouldn’t let anyone move me past it like it didn’t matter.

Because it did.

That one signature gave a system that is so ruthless, so broken, so power-hungry the ability to hand-deliver my children into something they did not deserve.

We are still picking up the pieces. Still working to repair the trauma. Still raising awareness so the next family does not endure what mine did for years.
